The Stone Age indicates the large swathe of time during which stone was widely used to make implements. So far, the first stone tools have been dated to roughly 2,6 million years ago.

The chronological framework of the Stone Age is very wide - it begins about 2.6 million years ago and before the beginning of human use of metal.
In archaeological science, the Stone Age is traditionally divided into three main stages:
Paleolithic or ancient stone age;
Mesolithic or Middle Stone Age;
Neolithic or New Stone Age.
The archaeological periodization of the Stone Age is associated with changes in the stone industry: each period is characterized by unique methods of stone processing and, as a result, a certain set of various types of stone tools. It must be recognized that stone was by no means the only material used for tools throughout this time, yet it is the most stubborn one when it comes to decaying and thus survives a bit better than the alternatives.
